A Love Letter to Deep Brown Handbags

Brown bags are having a moment, but not the flat, predictable kind. I’m talking chocolate, espresso, oxblood-adjacent, brown-that-flirts-with-black tones that feel rich, intentional, and quiet powerful. These deeper browns are reading less “neutral” and more statement, grounding an outfit while still delivering that fashion-editor edge. They’re warm, they’re sultry, and right now they feel far more interesting than classic black.

It’s impossible to ignore the Chanel 25 in dark brown… perhaps considered to be the bag that quietly ignited the obsession. Its rich, velvety brown finish struck a nerve across runways, street style, and resale feeds alike, proving that brown could be just as covetable, if not more so, than black. The popularity of that bag didn’t just validate the trend, it amplified it. With a roughly $6K price tag, the Chanel 25 may have sparked the moment, but it’s far from the only brown bag worth paying attention to.

I went digging and found some of the most beautiful brown bags that are everything but basic. First up is the Songmont Song Mini in burgundy, which yes, is labeled “burgundy”, but lives firmly in that deep brown universe. It’s moody, polished, and has that understated cool that makes it feel endlessly wearable. Polène follows closely behind with a lineup that understands depth of color better than most. Their burgundy is a true, saturated wine red, while their ebony sits right on that delicious line between brown and black, just like my hair color. Then there’s Strathberry, delivering chocolate brown bags with the consistency they’re known for. They simply don’t miss when it comes to quality, and their chocolate tones feel classic without ever slipping into boring. I personally love the use of mixed textures, suede with smooth leather.

During my search I found a brand named Elleme. I’ve never heard of them before, but it’s giving afforadable mid-luxe vibes. As this is a newer name to me, I can’t asset for their quality, but I also can’t ignore how stunning their brown suede styles are, especially paired with that elegant gold top handle. It’s soft-meets-structured in the best way, the kind of bag that makes an outfit feel styled without trying too hard.

Finally, the Moschino Tie Me, a true plot twist in my personal style story. I’ve always admired Moschino from afar but kept my distance because the brand’s boldness didn’t quite align with my aesthetic. That said, the Tie Me bag is undeniable. Chic, refined, and surprisingly timeless. I recently bought it in pink suede and it’s stunning, which has now spiraled into me wanting it in every color— especially brown. Consider this my formal surrender to chocolate tones and their current reign.
